How to bring refined English country style to your home for autumn

English country homes might be the epitome of autumn style. They’ve got a sense of refined charm, thanks to subtle luxe details, as well as a connection to nature – owing to their location and use of natural, local resources. Their pared-back yet cosy aesthetic is perfect for this time of year, so we’ve gathered some of our favourite pieces to help you recreate the look at home. English countryside charm, with a cool, modern appeal.

Stick to natural materials

The traditional English interior design style favours natural materials, especially wood and stone. So, to recreate this look, introduce plenty of wooden pieces into your home, whether in natural tones, or stained darker for a cosier, richer aesthetic. This light wood bar stool is ideal for creating an English cottage kitchen, while this modern, abstract wooden chair achieves the same look while giving it a contemporary edge. Then, pair larger wood furniture pieces with accessories in other natural materials, like this terracotta and navy wine holder.

Use pops of pattern and colour

There’s a playful side to the English interior design style, too – a cool contrast of patterned, colourful pieces with more refined or natural style choices. Achieve this fun juxtaposition with colourful accessories. We love this green and white patterned Moroccan platter and this monochrome, geometric Moroccan platter. Or, for a more subtle look, choose pared-back accessories like this blue and white ceramic fruit bowl.

Add luxe touches

The English country interior style’s got a refined, luxe feel – reflecting its origins in manor houses and countryside estates. An easy way to achieve this is with gilded or gold accents on richer toned pieces. This white and gold cup and saucer is simple yet effective – and a cost-effective design idea. While this green and gold table lamp has a gentlemen’s parlour feel while also helping bring light into darker spaces. For an elevated dining room look, we love this bentwood upholstered dining chair in dark wood and rich red tones.

A traditional design, the Sandra placemat is a gorgeous backdrop to  a place setting, on your table or layered on a cloth. Sandra Woven Palm Placemat is hand woven by the women of Usiacuri with iraca palm, a material that has been used for generations. The Colombia Collective was founded in 2019 by Kate Wrigley with the aim of sharing the incredible stories and craftsmanship that she had discovered whilst living in Colombia. Today, they work with over 800 artisans from 14 different communities. Constantly learning from one another and developing new creations to share with the world. Each community has its own identity, its own culture and its own stories that are a fundamental part of every piece that they make. Copper Beech Linen Table Cloth

Copper Beech Linen Table Cloth

Thyme From £260

The Copper Beech’s distinctive leaves are deep purple in the spring, turning to a coppery hue in the autumn. As the season turns from autumn to winter, the woody beech nut cups release their nutty treasure. The decorative and sturdy tree has been planted in landscaped gardens and parks for centuries and our Copper Beech tree stands tall at the end of the Manor garden. Hand painted by our Founder and Creative Director, Caryn Hibbert, all of our original prints depict the flora and fauna that inhabit Thyme’s garden, farm and wild spaces. The prints are then repeated by her husband, Jerry, before being scaled by our expert team in Lithuania onto beautiful, washed European linen. Our tablecloths are 160cm in width and come in four lengths: 260cm, 320cm and 380cm, 450cm. They are 100% washed European linen. 40 degree wash, no steam, do not bleach
