THE FLÂNEURS
Meet Gabriella Picone from Idda Studio
Gabriella Picone is a New York based artist and designer working in painting, textiles and ceramics. Her practice is fueled by her exploration of materials and by her creative upbringing in both Sicily and in New York. She graduated from The Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Painting in 2010 and in 2019, she founded Idda Studio.
What drove you to create Idda Studio?
I have always been a painter and started Idda Studio as a way to bring my paintings to life in a new way. Influenced by my experience growing up in Sicily and inspired by the Mediterranean's natural scenery, Roman mythology, and traditional decorative arts, Idda Studio aims to capture these elements.
For each fabric collection, I meticulously paint each design to scale on paper before transferring them onto high quality silk, cotton, and linen fabrics sourced from Italy. All our creations are limited edition, suitable for both wearing and enhancing home interiors. Since launching our fabric collection, Idda Studio has grown to work on bespoke fashion collections, limited edition product designs and custom interior projects.
What serves as your inspiration? And how do you approach working with various materials?
Growing up between New York and Sicily and splitting my time between both places, my creative process has always started with research into stories and traditions. Whether through my travels, or what I am reading, or what I am visiting - I will always keep a sketchbook with me to write and draw. These collected artifacts excite me to design new work and are the root of Idda Studio.
Drawing, painting and writing are natural parts of my daily practice and drive the designs I create. When starting a new collection, I will assemble a moodboard with a color story and motifs and then will often translate these ideas into fabric or ceramics. I love the ability to create painterly works in different materials.
Three things you love about New York City
There are so many incredible places in NYC. The MET is my favorite museum in the city and I love visiting the Greek and Roman wing - there is a quiet room upstairs with incredible statues and artifacts that I will often sketch.
I also love going to the Model Boat Sailing Pond in Central park - it reminds me of when I would visit it as a kid and sail toy boats in the pond.
Another one of the most magical experiences in NYC is going to an Opera performance at The Metropolitan Opera House - it’s an epic space with always inspiring programming.
What does the word Flâneur mean to you?
Flâneur to me is a way of life - it’s about taking the time to appreciate the moment and
the details that we often may forget. It’s about seeing the beauty in experiences and
exploring a new way of seeing.
What is your vision for 2024?
I predict more handmade design and art in 2024. Less mass production, less “fast
fashion” + “fast furniture” and more interest in the artisan and hand crafted objects and
art. You can see how the craft movement evolved in recent years and I think this trend
will only continue to grow as people appreciate the value of unique items.
