Festive furnishing: Winter living room ideas

When winter hits, most of us go into hibernation mode – seeking out warm, snuggly spots to pass the hours in cosy comfort. And so when it comes to getting your living room winter-ready, cosiness is key – along with festive decorations and the tree, of course. Create a space that’s worthy of weekends spent on the sofa watching film re-runs by following our favourite winter living room tips and tricks – they’re all here, in the last of our festive furnishing guides.

Add velvet accessories

Velvet’s one of the most indulgent fabrics you can use to decorate your home, which makes it a great winter living room idea. As well as looking luxe, its plush surface is perfect for snuggling up to – and velvet accessories usually come in rich, seasonal tones. If you’re not sure where to start, velvet pillows are the easiest velvet accessory to get your hands on. We recommend this velvet embroidered pillow, or this more Scandi-inspired pink and black velvet pillow – especially when paired with a cosy, contrasting throw. For a cleaner, but still cosy, look: try this black and white velvet pillow and some gold accessories.

Make it dark

While we don’t propose completely redecorating your room for the festive season, adding darker tones through throws and accessories – in colours that complement your existing decor scheme – is an easy way to make your living room more inviting for winter. This grey striped cushion and grey cotton throw make a great, deep-hued pair. Or for something a little more saturated, try burgundy pieces, like this burgundy ceramic vase.

Add cosy accessories

This tip’s tried and true – but there’s never a better time to add cosy accessories to your living room than the winter. The plush, tactile fabrics are inviting – especially when sofa days call. And their textured surfaces add a luxe, indulgent look that’s perfect for the season of over-indulgence – the perfect winter living room idea. A handwoven Moroccan throw is a great place to start. Or for something more fun and festive, this red cotton pom pom throw ticks the box. For extra cosiness, try placing a grey quilted throw on the arm of your sofa.
