Drei Berge Hotel
With its green-painted exterior and candy cane-striped shutters, you’d be forgiven for thinking the Drei Berge Hotel was part of a Wes Anderson film set. Tucked away in the idyllic alpine village of Mürren at an altitude of 1638m, the Drei Berge (meaning three mountains) is a truly cinematic experience.

Not only is the recently renovated hotel a captivating synergy of past and present, but it provides unrivalled, jaw-dropping views of three of Switzerland’s highest mountains, Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch. In fact, those views are so impressive that the locale has acted as filming locations for James Bond and Sherlock Holmes, as well as scenic inspiration for J.R.R Tolkien’s epic Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Take a Tour
The perfect stay
Step inside the Bernese guesthouse, and you’ll find 19 charming rooms and suites of varying sizes, each named after a famous mountain from Mount Fuji to Kilimanjaro, showcasing a seamless blend of traditional Swiss mountain style and a personality-packed 70s-inspired aesthetic.
These stylings continue throughout the rest of the hotel, with original features and decor coexisting harmoniously with recent additions. Inside the lobby, mid-century pieces and antiques are offset with flags, colourful posters and a showstopping bespoke mural inspired by David Lynch’s Twin Peaks.
Ramdane Touhami’s, the hotel’s owner, favourite room? That would be the Jungfrau, which offers uninterrupted views of both the Eiger and Mönch mountains.

Design
Anarcho-Mounteneering
Originally built in 1907 and until recently known as Hotel Bellevue, the hotel has undergone a dramatic transformation since the beginning of 2023. Touhami placed a focus on creating a sympathetic blur of tradition and modernity, adding his signature with custom-made carpets, contemporary comforts and unique vintage decoration while restoring and respecting the existing furniture and architecture.
In tribute to traditional Swiss mountain architecture, wood features heavily in the scheme, from the bespoke beds that were painstakingly helicoptered into the car-free village to the original dining room chairs which are engraved with the names of local families.
The result? A homely and cosy environment that reflects its surroundings and the time-honoured way of life in the Bernese Oberland Alps.

Meet the host
Ramdane Touhami
French-Moroccan creative polymath and entrepreneur Ramdane Touhami is the brainchild behind Drei Berge, and we wouldn’t blame you for thinking he’s a veteran hotelier; in fact, this is his first venture into the world of hospitality. Among his lengthy list of achievements, he is responsible for the overhaul of Cire Trudon and Liberty’s menswear department, owns the beauty brand Buly 1803 and his Parisian art direction agency Architecte Recherche Industrie. Oh, and he was awarded the French equivalent of a knighthood in 2020.

Details we loved
It’s clear to see that Touhami is a stickler for details from the plethora of finishing touches at every turn. Each room has monogrammed bed linen and towels made by Beltrami, a small eco-conscious Italian manufacturer which uses fibres made from European birch trees. Elsewhere you’ll notice expertly curated playlists, bespoke plates and glassware, and even a signature scent throughout, all designed by Touhami and his team, of course.
The hotel’s transformation doesn’t stop at the design though, its restaurant is now a welcome retreat after a long day of slaloming slopes or scaling mountains. You won’t find any fondue here though, instead, a thoughtful and electric blend of Swiss, Japanese, Italian and Asian cuisines made with fresh seasonal ingredients. After a hearty meal, the bar serves as the perfect place to enjoy the views with a cocktail or glass of wine specially selected by the hotel’s in-house oenologist.

You can’t come to this part of the world without exploring the majestic natural beauty that defines it. Of course, Mürren hosts a total of 52km of ski runs, but if skiing isn’t your thing then luckily the Drei Berge offers a slew of other sporting and leisure activities including seasonal hiking trails, tennis, paragliding, panoramic yoga, camping under the stars, a cinema and an indoor swimming pool complete with a sauna – phew. After all of that, you can escape to the hotel’s bookshop-cum-library.
Lastly, the hotel offers a private driver service to ensure a stress-free arrival. A custom Range Rover Defender will pick you up from Interlaken station before heading through forest roads to the cable car which takes you up the mountain to the hotel’s door.
