How To
5 Ways To Create A Reading Nook In Your Home
If you’ve ever dipped your toe in the virtual world of book tok, then no doubt you’ve been seduced by the romantic notion of a home library. Even though it’s a luxury few of us can turn into a reality, we’ve been swayed by the idea of a reading nook instead.
Maybe you’ve been meaning to get back into the rhythm of reading again or want to inspire a little extra relaxation time, either way, having a little corner in your home in which to get lost in a good book could be the catalyst you need. Luckily, we’ve put together five ways to make that a reality, whether you’ve got a whole room to dedicate to it or a small space.
Transform an existing space
There’s no need to create a new space, you’d be surprised how many small areas in your home will serve as an excellent book nook. Corners, alcoves, bay windows, spare walk-in cupboards and even the area under the stairs all make for cosy spots to hunker down and escape to the pages of a great read.
If the area you’re using doesn’t have a natural division from the rest of the room, consider utilising curtains, screens or shelving to create a distinct zone; this will enhance the cosiness and privacy of your space, too.
Prioritise comfort
Comfort is key when planning your new nook; after all, it should be a place of escapism, and no one wants to do that in discomfort. It all starts with picking the perfect chair, we’d recommend choosing the biggest and comfiest one you can accommodate with wide arms and a deep seat so you can fully curl up on it. If a large seat isn’t an option for you, perhaps add in a footstool to maximise your space. To really amp up the cosiness, kit your area out in a plethora of throws, cushions and rugs in relaxing tones and plush textures.
Choose the right lighting
When choosing lighting, it’s key to remember that first and foremost, it should be practical. Low mood lighting might look great, but in reality, you might not be able to see what you’re reading, and no one wants eye strain ruining their relaxation time.
Opt for different light sources to combine aesthetics with functionality, we like the idea of a small table lamp for ambience and a brighter anglepoise-style floor lamp to light your pages perfectly.
Add in a side table
Not only is a side table in your nook an essential place to house your TBR pile (that’s Book Tok talk for “To-be-read”), but no doubt you’ll want a drink and snacks during your reading session and your favourite scented candle for the atmosphere. A small table is also a great way to anchor your nook in a bigger space and make the area look more intentional. Lastly, cover it in your favourite accessories to ensure a personal feeling.
Delete distractions
The author David L. Ulin once wrote "Reading is an act of resistance in a landscape of distraction." so when designing your nook, consider how to minimise distractions in your vicinity. Depending on the limitations of your home, of course, position your set-up in a place away from TVs, computers and conversation to get the most relaxation from your precious reading time.
