Gabbeh rugs are traditionally made by the Gashgai and Lori nomads in the Fars province around Shiraz. Originally woven for sleeping, their higher pile provides added warmth. The use of hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool creates a distinctive coarse texture. Many Gabbehs feature natural shades of cream, brown, and grey, while red, yellow, green, and blue tones are derived from plant-based dyes.

Most Gabbeh designs are minimalist. When patterns are present, they typically feature stylized everyday scenes from nomadic life — such as goats, camels, dogs, plants, and people.
