Flat-woven rugs have been crafted in homes for centuries and are found throughout Iran. Some of these are Kelims—flat-woven wool rugs known for their distinctive "Kelim slit." Others are Sumaks, flat-woven rugs with an embroidered appearance on the front and loose threads on the back.

Originally, Kelims and Sumaks served multiple purposes. They were used in front of doors, to cover camels or horses, as tent roofs, table coverings, or sleeping mats. These rugs have been carefully preserved or lovingly restored.
