The Cult of the Stripe
There are certain motifs that return every summer, but none quite as reliably as the stripe, says interiors editor Georgina Blaskey
By Lara Silva
Why Stripes?
Come June, they’re everywhere. Across beaches and balconies, from deckchairs and parasols to awnings, table linens and Riviera umbrellas, stripes emerge as the unofficial pattern of the season. If florals belong to spring, stripes belong unequivocally to summer.
Part of their appeal lies in their ability to transport us. A striped canvas deckchair immediately conjures a windswept English seaside promenade. A blue-and-white parasol evokes long lunches on the Amalfi Coast. A faded striped awning brings to mind the cafés of St. Tropez. Few patterns are as geographically versatile or emotionally loaded.
A Perfect Match
Unlike many decorative trends, stripes never really disappear. Instead, they ebb and flow between fashion, interiors and travel culture, quietly reinventing themselves each year. Their origins are surprisingly practical. Stripes have long been associated with maritime life, appearing on sailors’ uniforms and beachside furnishings because the bold linear pattern was easy to spot from a distance. Over time, utility became style, and style became a kind of visual shorthand for leisure itself.
Perhaps that's why stripes feel especially right in June. They arrive at the precise moment we begin shifting our lives outdoors. Garden tables reappear. Balconies become dining rooms. Weekends stretch towards the coast. We start looking for objects that feel optimistic and unfussy, and stripes answer that brief perfectly. They possess structure without formality, colour without chaos.
The current stripe revival also feels refreshingly broad. Gone are the days when stripes were limited to nautical blue and white. Today's interpretations range from butter yellow and cream to tomato red, olive green and faded terracotta. Candy-coloured cabana stripes sit comfortably alongside earthy ticking stripes, creating a look that feels collected rather than coordinated. The effect is playful, but never childish.
How to Achieve the Look
Outdoors is where the pattern truly comes into its own. A striped umbrella instantly creates atmosphere, even in a modest garden. Layer a striped tablecloth beneath a scattering of seasonal fruit and suddenly lunch feels like a holiday. The same applies indoors, where striped lampshades, cushions and bed linens bring a sense of movement and ease. There is something reassuringly timeless about a stripe; it manages to feel nostalgic and contemporary all at once.
Ultimately, the enduring appeal of stripes comes down to their optimism. They remind us of holidays, sunshine and slower afternoons. They signal escape without requiring us to leave home. In a world increasingly saturated with fleeting trends, the humble stripe remains remarkably resilient. Every June, it returns, fluttering from awnings, stretched across deckchairs and dancing beneath parasols, inviting us to embrace the season's simplest luxury: the art of summer living.
