Nevertheless, giving art is an art in itself, so we’ve outlined a few rules and tips to help guide you through the process, from ensuring you pick something unique and personal to branching out to other mediums. Unleash your inner artiste and elevate your gifting game…

Consider their current interior style

Most importantly, before buying anything for anyone, you should take the recipient’s interior style into account; there’s no point in sourcing something ultra-modern if they live in a period property with coordinating decor and furniture, it just won’t make sense. Consider their colour scheme, architecture and the general vibe of existing art they may have to ensure your choice fits in harmoniously.

Similarly, make sure there’s enough room for your art! We’d advise erring on the side of caution and opting for smaller pieces to ensure they’ll fit and not dominate the space. If you can, conduct a recce beforehand to identify potential homes for your gift or holes in their existing collection that you can fill. Also, having an idea of which room the art might go in can help you decide on what to get.

Depending on available space, your budget and your commitment level, a gallery wall can be a great way to gift art, even if it’s just a mini version. Pick out a few pieces that look good together in differing sizes, or select prints that will slot perfectly into an existing gallery collection.

Don’t limit yourself to wall art

Prints and paintings are a tried and true way to gift art, but if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, or you know the recipient has a penchant for something a little different, branch out into other mediums such as furniture, sculpture or objets d'art.
