I love mixing materials and eras to create a collected look that tells an interesting story, so any item or material that lends a hand to this philosophy is always welcome.

Tips from the Experts

Sightlines! What you see when you first enter a room—or look through to another one—can completely shape how a space feels. The seemingly-casual placement of a single vintage chair or a billowing potted tree in the right corner brings so much to a space. I always try to create moments that invite you in.

Layering rugs! Putting a smaller vintage or textured rug over a larger, affordable jute or sisal base instantly elevates a room and makes it feel more collected and cozy.

The biggest challenge is balancing personal style with practical needs. I overcome it by prioritizing timeless materials and layouts that age well with time and activity, without sacrificing beauty. Be okay with things not staying perfect forever. Embrace the change and seasonality in life.

Start by truly understanding how the client lives day-to-day—function should lead form. Focus on the main traffic paths in and out of the home. What other activities and routines take place within the home? Where do the kids play? Where do the pets sleep? The design becomes so much clearer and more meaningful when you anchor it in the rhythms and rituals of real life.
