The How To
Millennial pink, Barbie pink, hot pink, baby pink, dusty pink, powder pink, rose, salmon, coral, bubblegum, nude, petal, ballet, barely there, and - possibly my favourite - blush. Pink, in all its guises, is a versatile, complex and endlessly useful colour. At its most neutral, it’s plaster pink; Setting Plaster by British paint brand Farrow & Ball became the interior designer’s go-to last decade, and many paint brands report their own iterations as customer favourites today. Lick’s Pink 02, for example, is a bestseller, its dusty tone said to “create a unique atmosphere that is both fresh and physically soothing”. The perfect backdrop for layering more… pink.
The key to maximalism is that more is more - but this doesn’t mean chaos. It’s not about piling everything you love into one room without thought. Instead, it’s an intentional, curated approach to layering bold colours and patterns in a way that celebrates excess while still feeling refined. The end result should never feel cluttered or overworked; rather, it should feel expressive, confident and considered.
The Maximalist Concept
There are clever ways designers approach maximalism to keep things on the right side of tasteful. Colour drenching offers a strong, cohesive backdrop, especially when using a saturated pink. Add contrast through finishes - brass, lacquer, velvet - to bring depth and richness. Playing with scale is equally important: mix large, sweeping patterns with smaller, intricate prints to create rhythm and visual interest. Texture, too, plays a vital role. Mohair, linen and velvet each catch the light differently, adding dimension without overwhelming the eye.
For those wanting to dip a toe into the look, start small. An accent piece - a rug, a throw or a cushion - can anchor a scheme. Pull one or two tones from it and build gently around them. Or, for a more immediate impact, opt for wallpaper. A bold pink print transforms a space instantly; just be sure to ground it. In a downstairs loo, that might be a stone vanity, while in a hallway it could be a warm wooden floor.
Achieving Pink Maximalism
Beyond walls and larger pieces, it’s in the details that pink maximalism truly comes alive. Table linens offer an easy, joyful entry point - a rose-toned tablecloth layered with contrasting napkins or playful patterns creates a setting that feels abundant and inviting. Don’t be afraid to mix tones and prints; the charm lies in their interplay. Ceramics bring another layer of personality. From softly glazed plates in pale blush to high-shine bowls in vivid fuchsia, these pieces add both colour and tactility. Mixing styles only enhances the effect - delicate, scalloped edges alongside more rustic, hand-formed shapes create a story that feels collected over time. Soft furnishings might be the most transformative of all. Cushions in varying fabrics, such as velvet, embroidered cotton, fringed linen, can shift the mood of a room instantly. Layer different shades and textures together, unified by pink, for a look that feels rich but harmonious. A throw, casually draped, adds that final note of ease.
Ultimately, pink maximalism is about confidence and joy. It’s a palette that flatters, warms and uplifts. Whether you go all in or simply add a hint, the secret is intention - and perhaps just a little bit of excess.

Ceiling Light vs Table Lamp: Which Do You Need?
There is a pivotal moment in the late afternoon when the natural world retreats, leaving your living space in a state of quiet transition. The choice of how you replace the dying sun dictates the entire spirit of your evening, forcing a choice between the broad sky of an overhead fixture or the intimate pool of a tabletop companion.
