Styling a Nursery with Nephthys Illustrated

A nursery is the first room we design for someone we haven't met yet, and Nephthys Illustrated plans to make it a joyful one. Here she shares her colourful nursery ideas: pick one or two bold focal points, take a cue from Zeena Shah's sunny yellow and blue, and leave the Pinterest rulebook behind. As she puts it, if you want a beige nursery, have a beige nursery. Let her show you how to make yours entirely your own.

What do you currently have planned for nursery? Knowing the Nephthys' style, it’ll be a love letter to colour and fun

Once we finally get it plastered, a painted ceiling mural is definitely on the cards! I want us to be able to lietogether and look up at the stars. The room will definitely be colourful but without being overly “baby” so itcan grow with him.

Imagine the nursery was one of your prints, what's the little detail you'd sneak in to make it joy-maxxed?

A tiny tiger hiding somewhere. I definitely want to sneak some tonal tiger print into the room tooso it feels a little cheeky without turning the whole nursery into a theme.

Your work has such a bold, fun personality to it. How do you get that same energy into a room without it tipping into chaos?

It’s about giving the eye somewhere to rest. Personally, I’d choose one or two places to go bold then keep the other spaces calmer so it doesn’t feel overwhelming.

Who’s nursery is currently in your moodboard, do you have a current example you’re obsessed with at the moment?

Ahh, such a hard question because there are so many beautiful ones! At the moment I’m definitely taking paint notes from Zeena Shah’s nursery. That yellow and blue combination is so joyful. She also has my Lucky print in there which makes me love it even more!

Talk us through how you'd build a gallery wall in a nursery. Is there a story or a bit of humor you'd want it to tell?

I’d make it completely personal by mixing artwork and photographs with sentimental things like letters or hospital bands. I’d also add something that makes us laugh a tiny framed reminder of a funny memory. For me, those are the details that make a gallery wall so much more interesting.

If you had free rein on a slightly awkward or overlooked nursery: small room, weird angle, shared space — what's the first idea that would delight you?

I’d turn the awkward feature into the most special part of the room. An alcove could become a little shopfront or an angled ceiling could be painted as a striped circus canopy. It’s usually the unusual parts that inspire the most playful ideas and give a room its personality.

Is there a nursery cliché (too precious, too beige, too "Pinterest") you'd love to see retired? What would you dream up instead?

I think the internet has become obsessed with telling everyone what they should and shouldn’t like. I’d love to retire the idea that people get to decide what is “chic”. If you want a beige nursery, have a beige nursery. If you want colour everywhere, do that! Neither is right or wrong. It’s about creating a space that makes you feel happy and comfortable. It’s your home after all!
