The Art of Ascension: Styling Dramatic Metre-High Weddings
The standard taper candle has long been the supporting act of the tablescape, but the era of the "accent" candle is over. Enter the METRE candle: a statuesque, architectural powerhouse designed to command the room. From sun-drenched altars to midnight banquets, here is how we’re using extreme height and a 23-shade palette to bring high-stakes drama to the 2026 wedding season.

The Origin Story: You were inspired by tall church candles. Why does "extreme height" create more drama than a standard taper?
As an event designer, I’m always searching for something fresh, something distinctive that truly stands out. The idea for the METRE candles came from that constant pursuit. I had been looking for a candle that could bring more drama to a table, when a friend gifted me a pair of tall ivory church candles from Madrid. I became completely captivated, even trying to track them down online. We ended up using them at a wedding in central London, and despite having only two, their impact was remarkable. They created such an elegant silhouette, elongated, smooth, and quietly striking casting a warm, romantic glow across the table. A standard taper candle in a holder simply doesn’t offer the same uninterrupted elegance that a METRE candle provides. There’s something effortlessly chic about the way they elevate a dining table, whether it’s a long banquet setup or a round, intimate setting.
The Stacking Formula: What is your "golden ratio" for a perfect cluster?
It really depends on where you are displaying them. One of our favourite arrangements is what we call “the triple”: a METRE, a 75cm, and a 50cm candle grouped together. Clustered on a mantelpiece, one trio on each side, it creates a beautifully balanced and striking look. We love mixing heights, but a single candle can be just as effective. Whether it’s a METRE, 75cm, or 50cm, a standalone piece works perfectly when you’re creating levels within your styling on a coffee table, mantelpiece, console, or dining table. What people often forget is that these candles are not just decorative, they burn. And they burn for a long time. They remain tall, dramatic, and beautiful for hours, and even as they melt down, they keep their elegance. They really are the gift that keeps on giving.
The 2026 Palette: With 23 shades available, what is your go-to colour combination for a high-summer wedding?
We’re seeing a strong return to the classics for this Summer’s brides. Shades like Ivory, Shell, and White are especially popular among those seeking an elegant, romantic aesthetic. People love the fact that these candles can create a dramatic and stylish tablescape on their own, without the need for flowers. We’re also about to launch our new candle holder range, making it even easier for brides to bring that sense of drama into their own spaces. We love it when clients embrace colour. Someone has just ordered over 100 Mulberry candles, which will be incredible to see, we can’t wait! Another customer is pairing Cerulean with Milky blue which is a beautiful combination. It’s always inspiring to see how people mix and match shades. We even find ourselves giving these palettes a name; one client combined Turmeric, Tomato, and Forest Green, and we couldn’t help but call it “Very Gucci”, it’s all part of the fun.
Alter vs. Aisle: How do you style a "Metre-high" candle on an floor-level aisle versus a seated dinner table?
We recently styled a stunning altar at Somerley House, centred around an organ and featuring over 70 METRE candles in a range of soft neutral tones, all clustered together. The effect was incredibly impactful, bringing a sense of simple elegance to the space while creating a truly special, memorable moment. For a seated dining table, the approach is straightforward: the larger and wider the table, the more candles you can incorporate. One of the key advantages of these candles is their slim profile. Unlike bulky candelabras or traditional candlesticks, they don’t interrupt sightlines across the table. Instead, they sit effortlessly within the setting, enhancing the atmosphere without obstructing conversation. The result is a tablescape that delivers both impact and drama, while still allowing guests to connect comfortably across the table bathing in the overhead glow of METRE candlelight.
Texture vs. Florals: Do you recommend nesting these candles among flowers, or letting the sculptural wax stand alone?
Our sister business, The Lucas Studio, is an event and wedding design studio specialising in floristry. We’ve found that the candles work beautifully in both settings. They’re just as striking surrounded by rambling roses weaving and climbing between them as they are styled more simply, set in elegant glass candlesticks on a chic, contemporary, minimalist table. METRE candles aren’t just an accent; they’re the main event. Too often, candles are treated as a secondary or even tertiary detail within a tablescape. These candles were designed to do the opposite, to command attention and define the look, and they absolutely deliver!
The Sensory Shift: How does a "Metre stack" change the atmosphere of a room once the sun goes down?
What makes METRE candles truly special is their ability to be just as impactful in daylight as they are in the evening. At those long, sunlit summer weddings, when guests sit down to dine at four and the room is still filled with natural light, the candles are already lit, standing tall. They feel statuesque, almost architectural, magnificent and striking, allowing guests to fully appreciate their height and presence. As the sun begins to set, their glow deepens and becomes more atmospheric, yet they remain tall and elegant. Unlike many candles that burn down dramatically after just a few hours, these candles hold their form beautifully throughout the entire event. So as the evening draws on, through the last cocktail and the final song, they’re still there, casting a warm, ambient light, maintaining the drama and preserving the atmosphere you created from the very beginning right through to the end.
The Pro-Tip: What is the one practical thing (safety, drafts, or spacing) most couples forget when using tall candles?
We always advise making sure you have the correct candle holder for your METRE candles, and we’re always happy to guide clients through the options to find the right fit. As a rule of thumb, it’s better for the holder to be slightly too tight than loose. As long as it has a solid, weighted base, you can gently shave a little wax from the base of the candle and secure it in place so it sits straight and stable. What you want to avoid at all costs is placing a tall candle in a loose or unstable holder. In a still, indoor environment without draughts, METRE candles shouldn’t drip. However, if they’re positioned near an open window, air conditioning, or used outdoors, dripping can occur, though many brides actually love the added drip drama!
