THE FLÂNEURS
Meet Artist Ainhoa Montánchez
As artist Ainhoa Montánchez relocates from the sun-soaked vistas of Australia to the picturesque canals of Amsterdam, she embarks on a journey of renewed creativity. Inspired by the vibrant ambiance of her new locale, Ainhoa's paintings celebrate the beauty of everyday life and the joy found in simplicity. How did you start your creative career?
I've been drawing since before I can even remember - my parents tell me I used to spend my days sketching and painting on anything I could find, from bar napkins to notebooks, and yes, even the occasional wall doodle (sorry, Mom and Dad, haha).
At the age of 8, I asked my parents to enroll me in a painting academy, where I learned oil painting. Back then, my obsession was painting spring landscapes and cozy bar scenes - probably because it reflected my everyday life growing up in the Basque Country, surrounded by both nature and unique bars.
Despite my love for art, I pursued a career in advertising and PR. But during the pandemic, everything changed. I found myself painting portraits, sharing them on social media, and to my surprise, receiving messages from people interested in buying my work, especially from places like Australia, the UK, and the US.
Seeing this unexpected demand, I decided to juggle my marketing job with painting until I reached a tipping point. And now, here I am, art has become my life. It led me to leave my job in Barcelona, move to Australia to paint full-time, and now to Amsterdam, where I'm soaking up inspiration from its people, traditions, and culture.
What are the stories behind your muses?
Absolutely! I paint charismatic individuals who cherish life's simplicity and find joy in its smallest moments. My art reflects real people I encounter during my journeys—individuals engrossed in everyday activities, radiating ease and happiness.
I love concocting their stories, quirks, and motivations. I don't necessarily know the tales behind the people I paint; instead, I delight in leaving room for imagination. I want those who stand before my paintings to craft their own narratives, ones that might differ from my own.
I love to hear which family member a portrait reminds them of or where the scene takes them on a mental journey—reminiscent of the old cinema, which allowed imagination to roam freely!
Three things you love about where you live
As someone that has lived in many places, here are three from three different locations.
Bilbao - Hanging out at Bar Baster in the historic district
Barcelona - Spontaneous dinner and wine with friends at quaint old restaurants in the heart of Barcelona on a weekday.
Melbourne - Waking up to the chorus of birds
I've just moved to Amsterdam, so if any readers have suggestions, I'd love to hear them!
What does the word Flâneur mean to you?
It means my favorite pastime alongside art! Wandering the streets without direction, admiring the beauty of the streets, and gathering inspiration before settling down to paint.
Also, the word "flâneur" sounds so cozy and inviting to me, almost like a mix of "flor" (flower) and "flan" (a dessert), evoking feelings of warmth, comfort, and sweetness.
What is your vision for 2024?
Absolutely! I’d love to illustrate my vision for 2024 through new original artworks, but I’m currently in the process of buying an easel. So, in the meantime, I'll try to convey it with some older pieces, recent photos and words:
Fresh flowers, bicycles (I hope I'll pick up the skill quickly; it's been 10 years since I last rode one, haha), new rain boots, a new home, fresh artistic inspiration, antique shopping, museums and old treasures, and plenty of "flâneur" moments as I decorate my new space and explore the streets and corners of Amsterdam!
