Tips from the Experts
What makes a house feel like a home?
There are many answers to this question, but to me, what most distinguishes a house from a home is the presence of character and imprint of personality it possesses. Working in Los Angeles, a world of infamous smoke and mirrors that celebrates the fresh and the new, I’ve seen my share of fancy but forgettable houses. While they may be lavishly decorated, they lack personality because they were designed to mimic trends and impress others, rather than reflect the personal style of their occupants. A person’s idiosyncrasies, passions and imperfections have to be indulged and expressed for a house to truly become a home.
What’s one thing no one thinks about?
Lightbulbs! Perhaps it’s because my husband is a cinematographer, but understanding the impact of lighting is a critical but often overlooked tool for creating a mood. I’ve been in many beautifully appointed homes, hotels and restaurants that feel uncomfortable and uninviting simply because the lights are too bright, or the bulbs are too blue. Particularly when the majority of lights shine down from above, one feels over exposed and ready to be interrogated. A modest, unremarkable room can be made cozy, atmospheric and immersive by the presence of dimly lit lamps, wall sconces or the soft glow of candlelight. Creating warmth by lowering the color temperature is quick, inexpensive and endlessly impactful - your party guests will thank you!
How to make a big impact on a small budget?
In addition to warm lighting, paint and houseplants can have a transformative effect on a space without spending a fortune on furniture. Whether they’re a cheerful shade or white or a rich, exotic umber, painted walls make a huge difference in how a room feels. Similarly, well placed house plants bring texture, color and a needed connection to the natural world.
